The World of Gideon Irondell
The Barrens
A Land of Dust, Scarcity, and Survival
The Barrens lie west of the Fault Lines — a harsh, broken territory where the Uunders were driven after the war. Dust, hunger, ration lines, and patrols shape daily life. Yet within its poorest settlements, loyalty and survival have become their own kind of strength.
Life in the Barrens
Food is scarce. Homes are patched together from salvaged metal, old stone, cloth, and whatever the wind has not yet taken. Every neighborhood survives through caution, trade, quiet generosity, and the ability to notice danger before it arrives.
Lowspire
The people call their city Lowspire because it lives in the shadow of the Citadel Spine. Its alleys, rooftops, markets, and broken streets form the world Gideon knows best.
The Citadel Spine
Above the settlements rises Kull Kalijan’s fortress — a jagged seat of command visible from across the Barrens. It is both a warning and a reminder of who rules.
The People of the Barrens
The Barrens are not merely ruins. They are home to the Uunders. Families endure ration cuts, patrols, and fear, but they also protect one another in small, dangerous ways. A shared meal, a warning knock, a hidden packet of food — these are acts of resistance.
Gideon Irondell is shaped by this world. Before he ever learns what he may be capable of, he learns how much people can carry, how much they can lose, and how fiercely they can hold on.
In Book One
The Barrens are where Gideon’s story begins — among poor streets, rooftop paths, ration thefts, loyal friends, and the first signs that something impossible has awakened within him.
